PRINTMAKING

Heimlich; (German) adj. and adv. Belonging to the house, not strange, familiar, tame, intimate, friendly, etc.

 Out of all of these Different shades of ‘heimlich’ one exhibits a meaning identical with its opposite, ‘unheimlich’ , so what is ‘heimlich’; can be called ‘unheimlich’.  It is not unambiguous, but belongs to two sets of ideas, on one hand it means what is familiar and agreeable on the other, what is concealed and kept out of sight. 

 Images and objects have a history and a quality that is both universally and individually recognizable.  They help us establish a sense of what is real and what lies outside of our perceived field of reality.  They evoke memories of where we have been and what we have touched, tasted, smelt or seen.   By contemplating a drawn line or the contour of a form we can build associations between elements.  Experiencing something familiar can either give a satisfactory sense of recognition or a feeling of unrecognition (Déjà vu). 

 Drawing, etching and fostering subtle interactions between shapes and light in my prints seeking to establish responsive relationships.  Through my use of ink, paper, light and video I present a temporal experience rooted in this dialectic of familiarity while also commenting on the potential for paranoia.  The potential for material to express relationships of familiarity in its accepted and fearful sense allow for our memories to either comfort or betray.  I seek to craft delicate forms and shapes with minimal interference from my own neurotic self.  Through these interactions I aim to critique this dual nature of Déjà vu via the SUPEREgo/SUPERId dialectic.
